Environmental Systems Science
Prepare to understand and solve the critical challenges facing our planet—climate change, water scarcity, soil degradation, and the loss of biological diversity.
What is Environmental Systems Science?
Environmental Systems Science prepares you to understand and solve the critical challenges facing our planet: climate change, water scarcity, soil degradation, and the loss of biological diversity. These aren’t abstract problems—they’re unfolding right here in California, right now.
Our program connects biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science so you see the big picture. You’ll learn in the field, in the lab, and in the classroom. You’ll work on real research with faculty who are leaders in their fields. And you’ll graduate with skills that matter; not just knowledge that can be memorized, but the ability to ask new questions, design experiments, and adapt when things don’t go as planned.
Three Emphases
Earth and Climate Science
Focus on the physical processes that shape our planet—atmospheric science, hydrology, geology, and climate systems.
Ecosystem Science
Focus on living systems—ecology, microbiology, soil science, and the interactions between organisms and their environments.
Education
Focus on teaching, curriculum design, environmental literacy, and experiential learning to translate environmental science into meaningful learning experiences.
All paths share a common foundation and lead to the same degree. Choose based on your interests.
Career Paths
ESS graduates are prepared for:
- Graduate school in environmental science, ecology, climate science, or related fields
- Teaching in K-12 schools, informal education settings, and community-based programs
- Careers in water resources, conservation, sustainability, or agriculture
- Jobs with government agencies (EPA, USGS, NPS, USFS), nonprofits, or private companies
- Professional paths in environmental law, policy, consulting, or administration
